Help Boost Reading Skills With Great Science - Themed Writing

My students need 30 copies of "The Cay" and "Island of the Blue Dolphins" and the audiobook version of each.

Help boost my students reading abilities with excellent science-themed writings! I teach 7th grade science to inner-city students in a school that is in crisis.

The vast majority of my students have scored basic or below on recent literacy tests and over 87% qualify for free or reduced meals. My students have a great desire to learn about science but their limited reading abilities are a frustrating, daily hindrance to the learning process.

In order to help remedy this problem I try to incorporate reading and writing into all of my science classes. Two books that would fit perfectly into my curriculum are Theodore Taylor's "The Cay", and Scott Odell's "Island of the Blue Dolphins". "The Cay" discusses topics ranging from Malaria, to Coral Reefs and Hurricanes. "The Island of the Blue Dolphins" covers topics like coastal ecology, nutrition and survival skills. In addition I could use audio versions of these two books to engage the whole spectrum of my students especially those with disabilities and my non-readers. If I had some class sets of excellent science-themed fiction like "The Cay" and "Island of the Blue Dolphins" I could do an even better job of addressing this problem. I think these stories are interesting, relevant, and contain a diverse amount of scientific concepts that will blend with our curriculum, spark student curiosity, expand student vocabulary and inspire great class discussions.
