My students need 26 stability balls and 30 pedometers to help promote healthy choices in the classroom, which will hopefully lead to better academic performance.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Eighteen percent of children ages 6-11 are considered obese in the United States. Obesity and unhealthy children are growing epidemics in our country.
The students at my school suffer from inactivity and poor nutrition.
I work in a low income neighborhood where unfortunately junk food is cheaper than healthy food and electronics are cheaper forms of entertainment than babysitters. These trends have unfortunately led to unhealthy children in our neighborhood. I believe this lack of nutrition and exercise is one of the many causes of my students' daily exhaustion and inability to focus on academics. I want to work on changing this epidemic among my students in this upcoming year. I plan to do this by encouraging and providing students with the opportunity to engage in healthy activities throughout the day. Research shows that healthy students are better able to focus and learn in the classroom. My students are eager to make these changes. They just need a little inspiration to get them started.
My Project
To help us make these healthy changes, there are two major supplies we need:
First, stability balls. I want to replace my chairs with stability balls. There has recently been a lot of research around the benefits of stability balls in classrooms. Among the benefits are increased health and focus due to the opportunity for constant movement.
Second, pedometers.ÃÂÃÂ" My students are frequently standing on the playground instead of running (Strange, I know). I would like to have a class set of pedometers to loan to students during recess time, giving them a goal for how many steps they take during recess. I believe this will encourage them to run and walk instead of standing on the playground.
This project is vital to kickstarting my health efforts within the classroom.
While this will likely be an ongoing process, it is also an important one to setting students up for success in school (and life) both this year and for years to come. By instilling in them these important, and healthy, life skills early on, they will be on a much better and healthier life trajectory.
