The seventh and eighth grade students at our school enjoy being outside, participating in physical activity, and playing sports.
Our school is small, which has helped to foster strong relationships between the students in each grade as well as between the grades.
A lot of our students participate together in sports through the city or play casually at the local disc golf course and parks.
My Project
Learning about the positive effects of exercise on our bodies is very important, especially for middle school students. Our students will be using the pedometers to set goals for how many steps they take each day and will be using the heart rate monitors to keep track of how hard they are working.
Students will organize their personal data using charts to better understand what all of this data means (and to reinforce what they are learning in math). We will use this information as a starting point for exploring the California State Standards for Physical Education requirement for students to "Explain the effects of physical activity on heart rate during exercise, during the recovery phase, and while the body is at rest."
Donating to this project will allow students to accurately track how much exercise they get in a day.
This project will also allow students to experience first hand what different heart rates mean and how hard they need to be working to receive the health benefits they are looking for.
