Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember the first time you tried to read Shakespeare? For most of us, this was a tough moment. My middle schoolers are up for the challenge, but they would benefit from the No Fear Shakespeare version. It provides a side-by-side translation that puts Shakespeare's play into everyday language.
My students are 7th and 8th graders who are reading 1-3 years above grade level.
These students are often overlooked in our large urban district because students with high needs and low test scores command much of our schools' attention and resources. However, my school created honors classes for these students to ensure that our advanced readers continue to grow. They do not need remediation; instead, I have been given the responsibility to challenge them by engaging them in high school texts, to give them support when necessary, and to inspire them to become lifelong readers and lifelong learners.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They come from many different types of homes and backgrounds, but they share the desire to overcome poverty and they value education.
My Project
I am requesting 60 copies of No Fear Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night's Dream. These books will allow my students to read Shakespeare's words on one side of the page, while giving them access to translations of common, everyday language on the right side of the page. Using these books, students will be able to read independently and comprehend Shakespeare in class and at home. Because they are middle school students and have never been exposed to Shakespearean texts, my students need this resource to aid their journey through A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Reading Shakespeare is mentally and emotionally rewarding. Not only will analyzing this text improve students reading abilities, conquering such a demanding text will give my student immense confidence and pride.
By reading rigorous texts, their reading scores and analytical skills will continue to grow. They will be prepared to tackle the texts they will face in high school.
Without No Fear Shakespeare, I will not be able to introduce my students to the rewarding experience of reading Shakespeare.
My students need a challenge, but they also need help along the way. By donating to this project, you are ensuring that my advanced readers get access to upper-level texts. You are giving my students the opportunity they deserve. Advanced readers need to be pushed to maximize their potential, and this project will do just that.
