Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand."
Having a sand and water table in our kindergarten classroom will allow the students to explore the topics we study hands on and remember it.
I teach at a charter school in a low income community.
The parents care a great deal about their children's education, but don't all have vast resources to put a lot of money into it. These kids need opportunities to learn through experimenting with materials. Children, especially at this age, learn best through play.
My Project
When we study the plants of each of the seven continents, the kids can play with corn (North America), rice (Asia), and so forth, and really remember the content of our lessons. Part of our State Core includes learning about rocks, gravel, and sand. How else can kids learn about these things without actually experimenting with them? When we study water, they can experience the characteristics of water and play with the water toys, learning about pressure, gravity, and a variety of other topics.
The things we do are the things we remember.
These kids will remember playing with sand, water, and other things in their science center in kindergarten. They will become scientists, explorers and scholars as they develop their skills at our new sand and water table.
