My Students

By Junior High they've sort of lost the idea that school (and science) can be tons of fun! It's so much fun for me, and I want to share that with them. I chose to teach because I wanted to share science with as many people as possible. This way I get to share with 170 people every day!!

In our small community many kids have to grow up quickly.

School, for many, is the only place where they are still "kids". More than 50% of the students in this rural town live at or below the poverty level. I want to put some fun, hands-on, kid stuff back into their days!

My Project

These items would get the kids out of the boring old science text ; ) and allow them to get their hands and minds busy with interesting and colorful projects. Instead of note-taking, they will use colored pencils and scissors to create fun foldables and mini-books. They'll be using the graduated cylinders and rulers to explore volume, measurement and the metric system. All things that are hard to do with just a plain old text-book.

Middle school students are at a turning point.

I need your help reminding them how much fun science and learning can be. If we can maintain or recapture their interest now, we'll see them achieve and succeed now and in the future.
