This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning math doesn't have to be a headache. It should be a fun and hands on experience for all children. Children should be able to go from the concrete to the abstract. It shouldn't be about memorization either. I want my students to REALLY understand and love MATH.

My students live in a very impoverished section of Los Angeles.

They live in a mostly industrial neighborhood where gang violence is seen as the norm. Students spend long hours at school and eat most of their meals at school. They all qualify for a federally funded meal program. Many students have had tremendous hardships at such an earl life. They want to improve themselves and help their families too. Even at the age of 7 they know that only with an education can they break the poverty cycle.

My Project

My students need Hands-On Math Teaching Kits to learn a variety of 2nd grade math skills using manipulatives. How can I expect them to understand concepts like counting money or place value they can't see or hold it in their hands and explore it? Place value blocks are essential so that students can get enduring understanding of addition and subtraction of greater quantities. My students need to be able to manipulate place value blocks to see the actual value of it digit in a number. In addition I am also requesting a Time Learning Center to allow my students various opportunities to practice telling time to the quarter hour and a quarter past the hour. Telling time on a analog clock seems very abstract to 7 year old and in order for them to understand telling time they need ongoing reinforcement.

Please help my students internalize mathematical concepts.

Many times paper and pencil is not the way to help students understand mathematical concept. I want every child to feel successful during math class. I want them to be excited about every new concept being presented. I want them to yearn for more math. Please help my students by donating these essential manipulative so that they can learn math the right way.
