Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." - Confucius. This is the perfect motto for our Project Based Learning (PBL). Each day my students ask questions, conduct research, think globally, and imagine new ways to make the world a better place.
There are 27 first grade students in my classroom, with the majority being English Language Learners (ELLs).
In addition, they are also of low socioeconomic status, which means they don't have access to a wide variety of resources for learning. As a result, our classroom is their only opportunity to become fully involved in a hands on learning environment. Our school is a dependent Charter school in a district with mostly program improvement (PI) schools and the majority of the students get free or reduced meals. There are many students who academically come in to each year being below, or even far below, grade level. Even with the odds against many of them, my students come to school eager to learn each day. They are ready for new challenges & new are determined to make the most out of their educations.
My Project
My students will use these hands on learning EcoSTEM water and pollination kits to conduct experiments and do research to come up with ways to solve real-world problems. There are two PBL projects ts left this year. The first project surrounds water conservation and helping the California drought. The second project is touches on the importance of pollination and insect population declines.
These EcoSTEM kits will really enhance student learning within the classroom, but more importantly, they will help my students to have a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the global problems that currently exist in the world.
