We learn by seeing, and reading, and hearing, and writing, and discussing... but sometimes, we need to learn by DOING.
A history of low academic performance has led many people to dismiss our students.
We are nearly 100% free and reduced lunch, and our students often face challenges that few adults can even imagine. We consistently rank as one of the lowest performing schools, with some of the lowest test scores in the state. But our students are working hard to prove everyone wrong, and we're going to shock the community with what these students are capable of.
My Project
Students with low academic performance, in difficult economic circumstances and with higher-than-average behavior issues need hands-on learning more than anyone, and are much less likely to receive it in the classroom than their peers in more affluent, higher-performing schools. These resources will allow students to engage in the process of learning chemical reactions, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and basic chemistry. Students will use models to represent molecules and atoms, and use flasks, beakers, test tubes, and other lab equipment to perform very basic chemical experiments. These materials will prepare students to move on to more advanced topics in chemistry, biology, and physics.
Some concepts in chemistry and biology can be very abstract and difficult to comprehend, even for the motivated student.
These materials allow for classroom activities that serve the dual purpose of engaging students' attention while also making concepts more easy to understand.
