My students need to be able to practice keyboarding, learn how to create different documents, share work with each other, and begin research on the Samsung Chromebooks.
Success in my 4th grade classroom is knowing what you can do and learning to do more. It is fun to learn there are skills that are required for the 21st century and that you are learning them. It is through research and critical thinking that we go 'carefully, thoughtfully, and thoroughly each day'.
Being nine and ten is to believe in magic.
That means wanting dragons to appear, know they will, and for us to do a fund raiser for to take care of them!! This age group wants to work and do things that are grown up. And they can accomplish so much with guidance and positive modeling. Seeing a completely engaged group of 4th graders will so inspire you!
Using the tool of a computer is part of that process and having them know how to best use it will empower them throughout the rest of their lives. We are a STEAM school which means that we look at the world through the lenses of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Integration is how we work together and collaboration truly begins at this age because they can speak their minds about what make sense and what doesn't. Cooperation takes time, tolerance, and striving to help each member produce better work. That is the goal everyday. And if a dragon is ever found, 4th graders are the ones who will have found it!
My Project
These kids are exposed to many different types of technology at home and it is usually entertainment oriented. At school, they get to learn proper keyboarding, setting up documents, sharing and working together on writing, learn how to research and what sites are helpful or not and why, and practice math skills with some of the apps from the Chrome Web Store.
These 4 computers will be the first toward a class set that I hope to have soon.
The more they can become accustomed to problem solving on these devices, the more their tech knowledge grows too. Like the near space balloon project that is pictured above, they had experiments on the flight and were able to job shadow the senior class students. Having devices would allow them more access and ability to communicate with these students each day--that would help them immensely.
