Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the greatest strengths of my classroom is the diversity of its students. I feel fortunate to teach in a classroom filled with rich culture and varied experiences. Unfortunately, I have experienced language barriers as a great challenge.
My students are creative and full of energy.
92% of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced cost lunch, and many are learning English as Second Language. They are determined and possess a great deal of spirit, enthusiasm, and potential. Our classroom is a place that provides consistency and opportunities for them to find success. I would like to also make it a place where I can speak their native language in order to better connect with them and communicate with their families.
I have been teaching for 12 years and have developed my craft as a language arts teacher. Unfortunately, I do not speak Spanish, and have found this to be a disadvantage in building relationships and communicating with families. I feel at a loss when I don't have the words to form a connection with students in my classroom, as was the case with an ESL student in my homeroom just last year. When I call parents and they don't speak English, our conversation is over before it ever had a chance.
My Project
I am requesting the Rosetta Stone program so that I can learn Spanish and better communicate with my students and their families. This will communicate respect for my students' culture and language, and ultimately make me a better teacher. This valuable language learning program will help me communicate directly with parents during meetings, conferences, and phone calls. I will be able to teach English more effectively in my classroom because I will remove language barriers and build positive relationships with students and their families.
My classroom will benefit greatly from the bilingual skills I can gain through the Rosetta Stone program.
Content in my classroom can be better presented with an understanding of my students' native language. I can use my Spanish language skills to clarify misunderstandings and build relationships with students. The ability to better communicate with students' families will foster collaboration between home and school, which will also benefit students tremendously.
