Guiding Language Gives a Lift to Students!

My students need pocket charts and writing utencils to enhance their langauge learning and to hold all team members accountable for work.

My Students

"But, Mrs. H., I did all the work! GLAD (or Guided Language Acquisition and Design) is a new strategy that we are using to guide language development for ALL learners.

I teach in a bilingual classroom in an urban school district.

My students are an energetic group of Spanish-dominant students that spend half of the day learning in Spanish and half of the day learning in English. We are in a school that has three different learning strands: Dual Language Immersion, English only and Bilingual Education. We serve a very diverse population with over 60 percent of students living in poverty; all of the students in my class make up part of that 60 percent. We are also unique in which minority cultures make up the majority of our school population.

My Project

We are requesting two pocket charts so that each table (team) can create a sentence to contribute to a group paragraph. Then, with the extra-wide pocket charts we will analyze the structure and content of our paragraphs and have the flexibility to move sentences,words, etc. due to the largeness of the pocket chart. We need Mr. Sketch Marker's because the GLAD strategy is color based and each thing we write needs to be in a different color. The markers will allow us to use these strategies in the way intended for the entire year. We need colored pencils so that each student can have their own color when doing team tasks and I am able to see equal participation by all students.

This project is important because it will give my bilingual students a chance to deepen their understanding of the English and Spanish language through interactive, color based, activities.

Each student will develop their own language proficiencies at their own speed, but will be encouraged to push themselves.
