My students need leveled books, including a Grade 1 Fiction Set and Fiction and Nonfiction Combo Sets, to check out from the classroom library. These books will help ensure continued reading progress and success!
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go." Dr. Seuss. I want my students learning to read and reading to learn!
My school is in a suburb of Houston, Texas.
We have a diverse population of Hispanic, African American, and Caucasian. Our number of economically disadvantaged students is rising, we were at 7% percent economically disadvantaged 4 years ago and we are now 23% economically disadvantaged. What this means for us as a school, is that we need more resources to meet the needs of our students. We love all of our children and want to reach any child who is struggling and support them and their needs!
My Project
These resources will provide books that students can read on their own and be successful. Research shows that the more a student reads, the faster their reading level will increase! This is crucial for young readers to gain the skills that they need in order to be successful in all subject areas! With these new resources they would be able to select high interest books to read in the classroom and take home to read. If a student is reading below level, they need to spend more time reading than just what is provided for them during the school day. It is crucial that they are reading at home. My library does not have enough books that are on their level to provide them with both in classroom and at home reading. Another strategy that increases reading levels is to talk about books. These new books will allow me to form book clubs and give students the chance to have meaningful discussions about what they are reading!
I service students who are reading below grade level expectations.
I work with them in small groups on strategies and skills that they are lacking as readings. This project has the potential to impact 120 students each year from Kindergarten through Second grade. These resources will provide them with updated, high interest books to get them excited about reading!
