Growing Plants Without Sunlight?

My students need a grow light with table so they can experience in real time how plants grow from seed.

My Students

One of my students loves to shout out, "I did it!" I know they need to feel pride and ownership. Growing plants from seed or from cuttings is an experience that will not only help my students academically, but help them understand that they can make things happen.

Here in Tennessee you might think we see gardens everywhere, but my students live in an urban area.

Many of my students qualify for free lunch and their parents do not have time to garden. They live in apartments where digging in the dirt is simply not allowed. My students have severe intellectual disabilities and are not able to grasp concepts from a worksheet.

My Project

My classroom is in a cinder block classroom with no windows. We have had a couple of plants in the classroom, but we have had to give them away so they can live. With a table top garden which grow lights we will be able to plant seeds and watch the plants grow from seedling to plant. When the plants are mature we will send the plant home for parents to cook with or sell the plants so my students can have a business in our class.

My students need an opportunity to make something happen- to start a project and see the rewards of their work.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
