Growing Our Minds- Implementing a Growth Mindset Classroom
My students need books that will foster a growth mindset classroom where students will learn that it is okay to make mistakes and our brain grows as we learn new things.
"Today we will work harder to get smarter!" This is the quote I want to use everyday to start the learning in my classroom.
I teach a classroom of 20 lively first graders in a high poverty school.
Some of my students think that learning is hard, or they just can't learn. I am working to change their thinking by using the theory of Growth Mindset by psychologist Carol S. Dweck.
My Project
The books I am requesting have been used by other teachers to help introduce and develop the idea of a growing brain in their students. I will use these books over a variety of lessons to lead discussions on learning and the benefits of challenging your brain. I want my students to realize that is is okay to make mistakes. We all learn from our mistakes, and sometimes we learn more by making mistakes along the way. I want them to know that growing their brains and trying their best is more important then getting the answer right the first time.
Research by Carol S.
Dweck has shown that when students are taught about Growth Mindset and believe that their brains can grown and learn they perform better in school. These books will help me teach the concept to students in a child friendly way. By the end of the year I hope my students leave my class with a higher self confidence and they embrace the challenges that school and life have to bring.
