My students need potting soil, terrariums, and seed sets to learn about the plant life cycle and to experiment on the effects of different variables on plant growth.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking”

I look to provide students with the chance to pursue their own answers in research oriented ways
Within our school, we are developing a new academy that will be focused on STEM education.
My students will be the first group of kids to go through this program. With roughly 90 highly motivated students, the kids are excited to explore the world around them and find meaning in their own ways. This program has also targeted students who need the opportunity to learn in non-traditional ways with more focus on project based learning in the classrooms. Within this classroom, I will have boys and girls, children of many different races and backgrounds, and children who have different strengths and weaknesses that will help them not only learn from me, but from each other.
My Project
The seed set, aquarium and potting soil which I am requesting for this activity will be used to help my students learn about the different parts (stems, roots, xylem, phloem, etc.) of the plants and how they are used within the different plant systems (transpiration, absorption, and stimuli). The students will be required to perform research on the different seeds that are included and each group will care for growing these different plants. The kids will have to design their own procedures to ensure that the plants get the appropriate amount of water, nutrients, light, etc. to ensure that the plants grow the best.
As a result, the students will learn not only about the life cycle of plants and how they function, but they will also learn about the scientific process, experiment design, critical thinking skills, research skills, and cooperation skills that will help them in the future.
As a teacher, I strive to instill a love for learning and for science in these kids.
These students already have that love for learning, it is my job to help them develop a love for science. Through hands on, project based, research oriented activities, my students will be able to learn skills and gain knowledge far beyond what they would out of a book.
