My students need two building sets & a sight word fishing activity set, along with fun & engaging read alouds & picture books (fiction & non-fiction) to learn the love of reading. They love playing, exploring & learning through inquiry.
"There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all."
–Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
"A book is a device to ignite the imagination."
–Alan Bennett
"Through unstructured exploration,we foster the development of imagination and creativity."
-Beth Rosenthal Davis
My students come from very diverse backgrounds; four different languages, cultural & socio-economic differences.
My classroom is an inclusive one in that, I have students with a variety of needs (several students on an IEP), several are English Language Learners (ELL's). Most are low income and high poverty.
Preschool is the perfect time for children to fall in love with a wide variety of books and authors! We read numerous books every day, and they tie into our IB Planners. We learn about various jobs in our community and around the world; we tie Art projects into various books, including Tar Beach, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Mouse Paint, Elmer, Poppa Please Get the Moon For Me, and many, many more!
My Project
Students have the opportunity to Buddy Read, read independently (I have a few students that are beginning readers), participate in a large group Read Aloud, or sit near a teacher and a friend or two for intimate shared reading. I want my students to have a love of books, like I did as a young child. Making "Book Buddies" (stuffed dolls) to "read to & with" at home, while sharing their love of new books is the ultimate experience!
My beginning readers can "Go Fishing" for Sight Words & read them to one another as they "catch" them with the magnetic word set. Other students can play in the Water Table with the Waterway Pipe Builders as they create a variety of mazes, ways & structures for the water to flow. Another group of students may work in a Tactile Table with the Magic Water Marbles while talking about how the marbles get larger when more water is added to them, & how they get smaller as the water evaporates from them. A small group of students may explore building with the small blocks.
The books, such as If You're a Robot and You Know It and Only One You, will be used as read alouds, then they will be put into the library tubs where the students will have access to them in order to practice retelling, rereading, etc.
After listening to the teacher modeling the reading, it creates a great opportunity for them to practice their "reading."
The STEM materials will help build a foundation for a love of science & engineering & will expand resources for STEM experiences & learning!
