My Students
For some of us, it's hard to imagine a world without books. However, many of my students have never had the exposure to fun, engaging books to hook them into reading. That's why this project is so important to me. I'd love to stock my already growing library with new, great titles.
Most of my students come from low-income households and endure many struggles just to get through daily life. Reading in my class becomes a retreat for them, and often opens their eyes and hearts to school in a new way. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch and many of them work side jobs and take care of younger siblings in their "free" time.
My Project
If you are able to help me purchase these new books for my library, you'll be helping my students to connect to books in a way many of them never have. They're used to having photocopies of books or boring class sets put before them. They don't see themselves as readers. However, you'd be helping me to get award winning, engaging young adult titles that will change the way they see what it means to be a reader.
There is no greater gift you can give a person than literacy. By helping me to teach my students to become life-long learners and readers, you're changing the future of our New York City youth. And I thank you for that.
