Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What was the first book you read from start to finish? By fifth grade some students still have not had that experience. Let's help put that just right book in their hands by providing lots of high-interest stories including comic books.
My fifth graders range from voracious readers to those who bitterly refuse to pick up a book because they think they do not like reading.
Both kinds of students and all in between deserve to be exposed to a wide variety of reading material. For some children comic books are the only thing that will engage them. Comic books or graphic novels can be a foot in the door for many and can be the beginning of a beautiful reading life.
My Project
I have requested a great variety of graphic novels. My students will be able to pick up these new and unfamiliar books amongst all the old second hand ones I have picked up over the years. These new books would renew their enthusiasm for reading. My students create book reviews to share with the class. Adding to our collection of books would give them something new to talk about with their reading partner and the class.
You will absolutely change my students lives if you help us.
How? Donalyn Miller says it best, "ÂÂReading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education. Through characters,ÂÂ" the saints and the sinners, real or imagined,ÂÂ" reading shows you how to be a better human being."
