This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Dr. Seuss said it perfectly: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more place you’ll go.”
I teach 70 African American scholars in a public charter school in a severely underserved part of the city.
My school cares deeply about impacting scholars' academic and social/emotional learning and about giving them the tools and resources they need to be college-bound with a wealth of opportunities available to them. My scholars are creative, deep thinkers who are eager to learn. They make connections across content areas and apply what we are learning in class to what they already know and see in the world around them. They are inquisitive and curious, and they are excited by new learning experiences. They would appreciate and devour the learning opportunities made available by new resources.
My Project
Many of my scholars don't have books at home. I do my best to provide a rich classroom library from which scholars can take books home as well as read in our classroom. Being a first year Teach for America teacher, my library would benefit from many more books appealing to scholars interests. My students need graphic novels to expose them to a new genre of writing. I started off with 1 Geronimo Stilton graphic novel and quickly learned that there was a HUGE demand for more.
By providing me with these books, you will be impacting the 75 scholars I have in class this year as well as classes to come.
You will be giving high-interest, high-engagement books to scholars who don't have access to books outside of school. You will be helping me develop stronger readers and lifelong readers who will be able to compete with scholars from districts where resources are more readily available. Please help me give my students a chance.
