I am a fifth-grade teacher in Winston-Salem, N.C. My school is an ESL school with 40% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. I have 28 students in my class; 14 receive free or reduced lunch, and 6 are ESL. Seven of my students are considered "at risk," meaning they must receive after school tutoring in reading and math.
Many of my students are struggling in math. They all learn differently, making it a challenge to create lessons that meets all of their needs. Math lessons that revolve around the multiple intelligences will allow for all of the learning styles of my students to be met.
My goal for this school year is to motivate my students to want to learn math and see how math fits into the "real world.” My goal is to provide comprehensive math lessons that address specific instructional targets and learning styles. Differentiated instruction will allow me to assess "the whole child," versus relying on standardized testing or traditional pencil and paper methods.
Students learn and retain skills when actively involved. Critical thinking problem solving activities encourage students to examine math problems not just as numbers but real life problems. I would like to provide lessons that incorporate interactive games for flexible grouping, cooperative learning, journal writing and enrichment activities. These activities will enrich student learning of math and also help foster a sense of community within the classroom as students work together to solve problems. With such a diverse student population a sense of community is essential in all of our daily lessons and activities.
Gourmet Curriculum Press, a vertically aligned skills program for reading and math, provides lesson warm-ups and interactive lesson plans. Teachers from other schools have used this program in their classrooms and all say how amazing it is to see how much learning is going on and how the children are involved in learning.
My school's theme is Adventures in Learning. Gourmet Curriculum Press' hands on activities will help my 26 students grow academically and create fun and easy learning adventures along the way.
