Going Solar with Technology

My Students

Solar Panels...there's an app for that! Did you know that there is an app for the iPad where it turns into virtual solar panels? It then measures how much energy a solar panel could generate from a given location. How cool is that?! This is only the tip of the iceberg.

My students are the 6th graders in a 4th, 5th, and 6th grade building.

Our school is located in a high poverty, rural community. My students take the role of being the oldest in our school - the role models - very seriously. I would love for them to be able to be a wonderful example to our 4th and 5th grade students on how to be responsible stewards of our planet.

My Project

Learning about the environment is so very important. Students who learn about it earlier in life will be more mindful of their choices that could harm it. They will also be able to inform their parents of the importance of saving it and how to go about doing so. Besides the solar panel app, there is also an app called iBiologyforKids where students can pretend to be a biologist and do research. Animal Zoo allows you to observe animals in their natural habitat and learn how their existence is important to the environment. There is a life cycle app where students can learn about and observe a variety of life cycles. There are many recycling apps where students learn about recycling, how to recycle, and why it is so important. Students will be working in groups to complete an environmental project. They will also be able to search the Internet for more information about their given environment and ecosystem. To complete this project and more we need an Apple iPad3 with some accessories.

This project has endless possibilities.

My students will be able to learn things about the environment that will go above and beyond what they would learn without an iPad. Environments are all around us. The more young children know about them, the better off we will all be. Help me change the world!
