My Students

Do you remember being excited about working on a special school project? Do you remember what it felt like to bounce out of bed because you couldn't wait to go to school? The second graders in my school know that feeling when they are working on our school post office project!

I teach a fantastic group of second graders in a Title I school in Brooklyn.

They love reading, writing, math games, learning about art and sock monkeys! They will be able to incorporate all those subjects into our post office project. Every year, the second graders put on a school-wide post office. Second graders sell handmade postcards, cards, stamps and stationary sets to the greater school community. Then, a week before our winter break, the whole school writes letters and cards. The second graders deliver all of the mail! This study incorporates reading, post office history, writing, making commercials for the post office, adding money, making change, art and teamwork! It's lots of hard work and it is really fun. We donate all of our proceeds to charity. This unit is something that students fondly remember when they are upper-grade students.

My Project

My students create postcards and cards to sell. We draw holiday cards and then use foam stickers to make the cards look even nicer. My students will enjoy using the rubber stamps to make backgrounds for our cards. The foam stickers also help reduce the time it takes to make a lovely card. The more cards we sell, the more money we have to donate to charity! These stickers will help my students make gorgeous cards.
