My Students

Imagine growing up learning a second language from an early age? This is the reality for students in my classroom. The majority of our day is spent in Spanish, with science, social studies and specials in English. Students become biliterate and bilingual!

My classroom is made up of native Spanish and English speakers, many of whom come from low income families.

Our school is full of diversity both culturally and linguistically. Students in second grade are curious, eager to learn and share, as well as take positive risks in their learning.

My Project

This will be my third year teaching and every year students have complained about being on the old, thin, uncomfortable carpet for instruction. We start and end our day on the carpet in a circle to build community within the classroom as well as use it through out the day for mini-lessons. Students listen to their classmates share their thoughts and strategies from the carpet space. Thus, it is an important space in our classroom!

With this culturally beautiful carpet, students will be able to have their own "personal space" while learning, see themselves in the diversity of the people on the carpet, and have a comfortable, inviting, and engaging space for learning to occur.

Plus, the theme fits perfectly with our communities unit! Your contributions are greatly appreciated!!
