Glass Kiln To Create Colorful Fused Artwork!

My Students

A typical day is my classroom is a whirlwind of work. My students love to be creative and work with their hands. In order to engage them even more we are adding glass fusing to the curriculum. In order to create beautiful and contemporary glass artwork we need a kiln to fire their pieces.

I teach a group of creative and energetic high school students.

They have little access to art classes and I want to give them every opportunity for the 18 weeks that they are in my class. Over 60% of me students are on free or reduced lunch, so they rarely get to take extra curricular art classes. By providing a kiln for firing their glass artwork they get to work with a very interesting and unique material. I want to bring a life long appreciation of art to them and broaden their horizons. I also work hard to get my students to stretch their creativity and fine motor skills in my art class.

My Project

I envision the kiln set up on the far wall of my classroom, in a secluded and safe spot, but somewhere that students can access the kiln so they can learn the technical aspect of firing glass. We will go over the changes with the glass while it is inside the kiln, so that they fully understand the process. I will teach all student the process of firing, each day I will select specific leaders to program the kiln- with supervision!

My goal as an art teacher is to encourage students to be original, problem solve, and think outside the box. The art room is a place where each and every student can be successful. I aim to instill love of art and love of creating in each of my students, give them skills for the future, and artwork that they can be proud to say they made.
