GKHS Library's Nonfiction Collection Needs a Big Boost!

My students need 40 life relevant, current, and compelling nonfiction books including "Freakonomics" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" to educate and inspire them while sparking their passion for reading.

My Students

We live in a world that is constantly changing. In order to ignite passion and interest in reading nonfiction, the books in our library need to serve as a mirror for those changes. The average copyright date in our library falls between 1975 and 1995, which is an injustice to our researchers.

Our students attend a rural public high school, which serves about 650 students.

We are located in an area where the socioeconomic status of many residents is low. Many students have parents who are out of work. Our school relies heavily on state funding. This year we are struggling due to the state not coming through with that funding. Programs and teachers are being cut, and our students are feeling the brunt. Our students are creative and kind and they strive to reach their goals no matter what obstacles they face. They continue to achieve successfully despite more challenges and fewer resources. They forge ahead without complaints. Despite these challenges, our students work hard and utilize the limited resources we have to the best of their ability. They are patient when waiting for books from other libraries because we don't have the books they need. They don't make excuses.

My Project

"Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital." Thomas Jefferson This quote illustrates how your gift will impact our students for the rest of their lives and stresses education's crucial mission. Not only will these nonfiction resources fill our students with knowledge of life stories, rich cultural heritages, and historical events, but they will also ignite their passion for learning and reading for the rest of their lives. Our students will have access to intriguing and culturally rich accounts of Prohibition, John Lennon, Marian Anderson, social experiments such as The Pregnancy Project, and The Women's Rights Movement. These stories will inspire our students and illustrate how they can make a difference in their world by reading about others who did the same.

If you help fund this project, you serve as a vehicle for the transporting of knowledge that will help ignite our students' passion for reading and learning forever.

Your gift will never stop giving! Even when our students graduate and soar into the world outside of high school, the knowledge and skills your gift helped build will remain with them. Your gift will not only impact our current student, but also our students for years to come. Books are gifts that give for life.
