In science, we are always exploring. However, with exploration comes writing. My students are expected to gather information and take notes while exploring. Often times, students do not have the basic school supplies (such as a pencil or paper) to keep their information neat and organized.
I teach in an urban public school.
My students come from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Despite these differences, my students give their all to be sure they understand any topic that is given to them. I teach four different sets of students, including an enrichment class, that is using a high school level curriculum, as well as, ICT classes that incorporate both general and special education students.
My Project
As I stated before, many students do not have the ability to bring basic school supplies with them to class. With these materials, I will be able to ensure I always have something for a student to write with and write on. I will also be able to have students complete daily exit or reflection tickets on post-its and index cards. This will show me what students have learned in my class for the day. Students will also have the ability to print their projects for all classes through the use of computer paper. This is especially important because I am constantly using technology in my classroom. Students can use art supplies to express what they have learned, not only in writing, but in illustrations and diagrams as well. For example, when learning about cells, students can create and color code cells using paper, crayons, and colored pencils.
Overall, I would like students to feel that they have whatever they need at their disposal, from paper, to crayons, to hand sanitizer.
They will begin to learn that my classroom is a safe environment where they can use any supplies they need without asking. This is especially important in 8th grade because students are aware of their economic differences and feel embarrassed bringing attention to what they do not have. Instead, they will have whatever they need!
