Last winter, Julia came to me and told me that she wanted to change the world. She did the paperwork to start a Girl Up club at our school and has worked tirelessly ever since to raise awareness for girls' issues in our community and around the world.
The girls who are behind this project are pro-active, community-minded juniors who want to make the entire world a better place for all girls. Since the inception of our local club, the girls have spearheaded fundraisers, collaborated with other chapters, and networked with local businesses. Girl Up is an offshoot of the United Nations Foundation and seeks to empower girls from around the world to stand up for the rights and freedoms of girls in need.
The Girl Up Summit teaches leadership through community action and collaboration. Our girls will learn from and interact with girls from all over the globe. The girls will participate in workshops, listen to guest speakers, and brainstorm future projects. The girls will also meet with entrepreneurs, activists, and politicians. Just imagine the energy and ideas that will arise from this experience. Working in teams; solving problems; changing the world. Everything the girls learn from the summit will help them to move forward not only as a club, but also as individuals.
In Their Own Words
The goal of the Girl Up Leadership Summit is to teach girls to be leaders. Girl Up believes that "girls are powerful and when they’re educated, healthy, and safe, they transform their communities." We would like to send four members of our local club to the summit in Washington DC next July.
As the president of our local Girl Up club, I believe in the mission of Girl Up because I believe in equality. I believe that women and men should have equal rights. Our country, though not fully there, is ahead of most in terms of gender equality. Girls who live in the developing countries that Girl Up supports struggle simply because they are girls. They struggle to get an education, jobs, or even birth certificates. I want to help bring about change.
This project is important to me because the Girl Up seeks to empower girls and attending the summit will help my peers and me become stronger leaders. The project is important to the community because the girls that will attend the summit will soon be active community members. We are young, and we need help as we learn to become effective leaders.
