My classroom could be described as walking into controlled chaos. Because it is a communications class, we are either, speaking, providing feedback, or acting. The students in my classes strive to make learning authentic by creating experiences to learn outside the walls of our classroom.
Our students are typical small school students.
Each grade has approximately 40-50 students and we reside in a small rural community. One in six students at our school receives free and reduced lunch. Because of the size of our school, teachers work to maximize the learning impact on students by integrating technology into the classroom and by creating learning experiences that exist beyond the walls of the classroom. Technology helps to engage students and allows them the opportunity to create meaningful products that can be shared outside our school walls.
My Project
Authentic learning has the power to create meaningful learning for students. By working with businesses in our community and proposing partnerships with area businesses, students will create commercials, produce videos, conduct interviews, and utilize technology to enhance their learning. Students will use the camera for taking pictures and video recording. The iPad will be used to edit videos and create original projects. Not only will the students benefit from the use of the technology, but their products will also directly impact the community in which they live. Not only will they have the opportunity to utilize technological tools, but they will be opening the door to communicate with members of the community. By someone donating to the classroom, students can also see the possibilities for them to give back to the community when they have achieved success later in their lives.
Students from smaller schools often have limited experiences in classrooms simply because of fewer course offerings, and limited resources.
By providing students with up-to-date technology and access to work within the community these students are learning skills that would be directly applicable to various careers and open the door to possibilities that may not have currently existed.
