Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students' experience of a library is a graffiti filled, poorly-lit room where the books are disorganized and there is a long waiting list. I envision my classroom library to be a place where my students have access to the types of books they'd find in a well-stocked, organized library.
I teach an energetic group of bilingual and special education 6th and 7th graders.
Most of my students are reluctant readers but, when given the right environment and engaging reading materials, I firmly believe they will thrive and learn to love books as much as I do. I teach at a Title 1 school in the South Bronx where 100% of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Every day in my class, students will have 30 minutes for independent reading. During this time they will have the opportunity to browse our classroom library and choose a book that peaks their curiosity, launching their future as life-long readers. The majority of my students currently are far below grade level in reading. However, I envision them first encountering the classics in a less intimidating and easier to digest graphic novel form. I can help them move their reading levels. I just need the right books such as Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja 2-8 and Wimpy Kid Box of Books 1-7 to grab their attention.
Donations to this project will vastly improve the reading selection available in my library.
These books will help my students dive into fiction and learn the joys of literary escape.
