My students need two MacBook Air computers and protection plan to create videos and photoshop images as part of the Adobe Youth Voices program. These laptops will enable them to create multimedia projects.
Our students see many photos and videos in their lives, but they have little experience with visual literacy. Through lessons and these laptops, we hope they'll be able to critically evaluate what they see on TV, movies and in print media and more importantly become creators of powerful meaningful media.
We have students from all types of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds(our district has 40% of their population on free and reduced lunch.) This is not to mention that they are middle school students brought up in a multimedia world of youtube, ipods, smartphones, apps, video/computer games & sensory stimulation.
They communicate & are communicated to via multimedia in a big way.
I teach classes called gmstv and 7th grade social studies. Many of my students are very motivated to learn to create multimedia projects. The movie and image making process is something that they have little or no experience using. The students in our school also lack computers opportunities because there are too few computers at our site and many have no access at home to computers that can create and edit multimedia projects. These 40% of our students need our help to bridge the gap and give them the opportunity to benefit from the technological opportunities to have a digital voice.
My Project
Please help our students get some experience in creating multimedia projects and learning visual literacy skills. These skills are not often taught in schools, especially in middle schools and now our students can have a chance to consider what they are are visually digesting.
We need two MacBook Air computers. The laptops will be used in conjunction with the Adobe Youth Voices(AYV) lessons for students to learn to make videos using premiere elements and Photoshop elements. Without these laptops our student have little access to using technology at our school. Most of our tech equipment is obsolete and can't run this software. These are essential tools for their creations. It will be exciting to see the students learn to create these images and videos and then to present them to others. In addition, the AYV program has numerous modules that teach students to evaluate various elements of the multi-media messages. Our students are media consumers, but they haven't been given a chance to be creators of media that has their voice.
In a multi-media world, our students need to learn to create visual materials for school and life.
Our school has three new AYV teachers and although we are receiving software, we have a big problem in that we do not have enough computers. This problem becomes a bottleneck that keeps our students out of the labs. Please help our students have a chance in the tech labs. Give them the chance to gain their voice. This project has the ability to give all of our students access to speak digitally. Thank you!
