My students attend an elementary school in a public school district that houses grades kindergarten through 5th grade. There are 23 students in my kindergarten classroom that bounce in everyday full of energy and ready to learn.
My students are just getting to know each other but love to socialize and they are very curious about their world around them.
They are eager to learn new things, while having fun along the way. My students love to create and use their imaginations, so Play-Doh is a perfect outlet for them to explore while learning.
Many of the students are from low income families and qualify for the free and reduced food program. Some come from very difficult circumstances; children in foster care, homeless families, or those living in extreme poverty. Everyday these students attend class and do their best. Play-Doh is a perfect tool for learning and building fine motor skills.
My Project
My students can use Play-Doh across our curriculum and also during rainy day recess or on the days when there are no special area classes. My students need Play-Doh, Play-Doh tools, and a container for storage. They also need an assortment of magnetic alphabet letters. Academically, my students can use Play-Doh in our literacy centers to identify letters, learn sight words, and build fine motor skills. Many of them have not had a pencil in their hand or had any prior teaching before kindergarten. Play-Doh is a great hands on learning tool that will benefit the many different learning styles in the classroom. It can be also be used in many different ways in our Math and Science activities.
Many students don't have the opportunity to have fun, learning tools at home because of circumstances beyond their control.
I want my students to enjoy and get excited about learning. Play-Doh can be used to address the different learning styles of my students. No two students learn the same way, so with the addition of Play-Doh in my classroom, it will allow me one more great teaching method to teach my students. We need Play-Doh, alphabet and number cookie cutters, and a container to store them.
