My students need several materials for both cooking and sewing. We are in need of utensils for the kitchens, materials for sewing, and storage cabinets as well.
We're not making success stories, we're baking and sewing success stories. Many of my students enjoy FACS because it is a hands on curriculum. In order to make this possible we need the materials. What is better than learning skills that students will use for the rest of their lives?!
My students are 6th and 8th graders who are located in an inner city school district.
They are very diverse in not only nationality, but socioeconomic status, and family structure as well. Many of the lessons they learn, they will learn right here in the walls of our school. They rely on the faculty and staff to teach them more than reading and writing. Many of the important things we teach them are hands on skills they will use for life.
My Project
My students need several materials for both cooking and sewing. We are in need of utensils for the kitchens, materials for sewing, and storage cabinets as well. The students learn basic culinary skills as well as basic sewing skills in FACS class. Since we use the majority of our budget to purchase the food items, it is important that they are given the utensils and equipment to do their jobs. When the students leave FACS class, they will have skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. They are able to prepare basic meals as well as sew and repair textiles.
My students are motivated by things they see value in, and hands-on activities.
By gaining these valuable materials, we will be able to apply the math, English, and science skills that they learn to real life situations. Not only will they be able to participate in kitchen and sewing labs but they will also be able to give them something tangible to show how hard they've worked. These materials will help us to be better prepared and equipped in our classroom.
