My students need to be able to connect their study of science with their passion for sports with a Go-Pro Camera, Bacpac, battery, accessory kit, and tripod.
Like most kids, my students find it hard to make what they learn in the science classroom relevant to their daily life. I am always searching for new ways to incorporate their passions into how I teach science. Through this I can engage them and help them see the science happening all around them.
My students are a diverse community consisting of cultures from all around the world.
Unfortunately the one challenge they have in common is poverty. Because of this challenge they have not had the enrichment opportunities that many of us have been exposed to. I'm working hard to bring as many of these opportunities as possible into my classroom.
My Project
Sports is big at our school like most high schools in the country. At our school it is a critical motivator. When you live in poverty, school is not always the highest priority. Without the push from home we need ways to hook students pull them through those front doors every morning. They need a reason to come to school, and for many its the opportunity to become something greater as a part of one of our many athletic teams.
As a science teacher I want to tap in to my students enthusiasm for sports. This Gopro camera will allow me to build a bridge between the science classroom and their performance on the field. The athletic teams will be able to record their performance in HD and use the feedback to improve their performance. The Gopro hero3+ has the ability to record at 120 frames a second to produce smooth slow motion videos. These super slow motion videos will turn the swing of a batter into a fantastic physics lesson.
This donation of a Go-Pro Camera, Bacpac, battery, accessory kit and tripod will improve my classroom by getting science out of my classroom and into their passion for sports.
Making real world connections is an essential ingredient to making science and the process of science relevant to these kids. If I can make science more than just a grade to them, science becomes a useful tool that they can use to make their futures better.
