Our students like to escape the pressures of academics with books. Our school library provides a place to "get away" and read for sheer pleasure. Teen Read Week and Pennsylvania Young Readers' Choice Award selections give our students a variety of tantalizing titles to transport them.
Our students are high performing and curious.
We have a functioning school library with a certified librarian but no set budget. Though our students use the school library for research and inquiry, they like to enjoy the comfortable atmosphere of the school library and check out current titles. They look to the school library as a quiet haven where they can engage in all the delights reading for pleasure promises.
My Project
Each year, students have the opportunity to vote for their favorite Teen Read through the American Library Association's Young Adult School Librarian Association. Teen Read Week comes early in mid October, so our school library typically does not own many of the books on the list.
My students need a collection of exciting new books. If we could start the school year with these titles, the students could check them out and participate in the online voting. These titles are nominated by teens themselves.
Similarly, our students have taken part in Pennsylvania Young Readers' Choice Awards, another program where young people nominate the titles chosen for the list. To participate, students need to read three titles from the list. There are three levels: 3-6, 6-8, and Young Adult. In March, the students vote for their favorite. The results are tallied and sent to the librarians in charge. In May, the state's favorites are announced. Our school librarian then holds a PYRCA Ball where readers walk down the red carpet to celebrate the winners.
Any donation to a school library helps not only the specific project but the entire school community.
Participants in these two events will enjoy the camaraderie and fun attached to reading and sharing a good book; however, all the students will benefit from the addition of these favorite titles to our school library collection not just for this year but for years to come.
