Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are confused with many concepts facing Social Studies, and the concepts intertwined with the subject. They lack the understanding of which continent we live on, where it is located, what types of animals live there, and what are some of the land forms in North America.
Most of the students that are in my class have never traveled out of the state, they have limited background knowledge of what surrounds our state, and what our state includes.
They believe that Utah is the continent we live on, and have no background information regarding other continents such as Africa, Asia, or Australia. I teach all of the second grade classes social studies; it is my goal for them to have an understanding of the world including the oceans, the continents, landforms. lifestyles of other cultures, and what life is like for other students who are seven years old. I want to open the world to them for exploration, to broaden their horizons.
My Project
The resources I'm requesting are Time For Kids; a newspaper on their reading level that will open their eyes to what is going on in the world, and or the United States. Another item is a rug that includes all of the continents, oceans, landmarks, and animals specific to that region. A large globe that they can pass around and find location on the globe that we've read about. A series of books that talk about each of the continents, the people who live there and their customs. All of the items I have chosen for this project are hands-on materials enabling the children to learn at their own pace, revisiting and understanding the diversity of the world where we live.
I believe with my whole being that an open mind is a mind who tolerates others and appreciates differences.
I do not want my second graders to fear a certain group of people because they look different or live in another place. Tolerance is the key to understanding and getting along. I instill this within my class and we treat each other with dignity and respect. It is my hope that these students will go into the world and live unitedly; with compassion and respect for all people/
