My students need bluetooth keyboards for the classroom iPads in order to advance their typing skills through blogging and word processing of academic writing.
When was the last time someone asked you what you are passionate about? When was the last time someone asked you what you care about? When was the last time someone asked you what you want to learn about? In Room 100, these are the questions we ask each other, then we seek to find answers together.
The students of Room 100 are high school students from a rural, lower middle class area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Their high school is a fantastic learning institution that has a reputation for quality education. The high caliber education these students receive is as much a testament to the supportive community as it is to the motivated, bright, inquisitive students who walk these halls. Though the moral support of the community is unwavering, the financial support is not always as consistent. Since the recession hit, the state of Michigan has been slow to recover and the Upper Peninsula has been even slower yet. The median income in this county is $34,000. This low income (coupled with slashed education budgets at the state level) simply does not allow for many resources beyond the essentials to be purchased for this school. A community's moral support is essential to the success of any school, but moral support can only take a school so far and my students want to soar.
My Project
Through their participation in a concept called "Genius Hour," my students will be setting their proverbial wings and taking flight. For one hour a week, students will pursue a Passion Project. Students can: build a robot that makes scrambled eggs, compose a symphony, develop an on-line business, sell creations to support a worthy cause, learn how to run a 10K, implement a Bully-Free program for school, restore a car engine, invent a Nacho Fork. Students will become intrinsically involved in the learning process, develop critical thinking skills, time management skills, inquiry skills, and life skills that transcend the four walls of any classroom. But...in order to do this, students need to research and reflect upon their ideas. Room 100 is equipped with a classroom set of iPads, which satisfy the research component of Genius Hour, but reflecting through word-processing and blogging on an iPad is cumbersome. Students need keyboards to be effective typists.
Your donation will allow my students to develop the genius within each of them.
Students will document the learning process by utilizing a host of digital tools for research, collaboration, documentation, and presentation. The options for these digital tools are endless, but a keyboard for the iPad is integral to building students' digital communication skills. Please consider donating to this worthy cause because ..."No man ever followed his genius till it misled him." - Henry David Thoreau
