"Sometimes, it's just easier to say yes to that extra snack or dessert, because frankly, it is exhausting to keep saying no. It's exhausting to plead with our kids to eat just one more bite of vegetables." Michelle Obama's words reflect our goal - eat more veggies and fruit and know why!
Our school is a K-8 rural school in central California with a student population of 500.
We have over 50% of our children on free and reduced lunch. We have no immediate buildings around our campus. We are surrounded by woods and cow fields. All the students must ride the bus to come to school. Our student population is predominantly white with less than 20% ESL. Of those students most are Hispanic. Our students work hard and are engaged in learning!
My Project
We have been working several years to establish a school garden. My students need two raised beds, seven potato planters, Miracle Grow soil additive, and Miracle grow soil to complete the raised beds for our school garden. Immediately we will have science units for several grade levels following the life science standards. Additionally, we will be using the garden as an outdoor classroom for art, literature, and quantifying and qualifying nature as our entire campus is surrounded by green or open space- a true rarity in today's world.
A school garden is in reality a lifelong goal.
Whether it is science, enjoying the outdoors, reading, art, nature, get out into the garden. We are hoping that no matter what the pull, for you could not guess the varied number of possible attractions a garden could have for a school, the garden becomes part of their lives- today and always.
