My students need 2 raised garden beds for a place to grow plants--especially edible plants like vegetables! We are excited to collaborate with other classes and meet our science standards.
The students in our school, and in my class are eager scientists. The Next Generation Science Standards give us wonderful opportunities for hands-on experiments. Where can we test plants? New garden beds of course!
Our school is located in a city block, near a large university town.
We have students from all backgrounds and experiences. Our teachers love to work together to provide wonderful experiences for our students. We love to have fun and do our best to provide for our friends and neighbors.
My Project
My classroom will be plant scientists, along with many other classrooms in our school. These beds will green up our concrete and chain link fence area, while providing a much needed science area. We plan to plant two rows of plants in each bed, smaller ones in the front, and climbing plants in the back to grow up the fence. Together with a few other teachers, our students will build, plant, and care for these garden beds. We hope to plant many types of vegetables to share with the students of our entire school. We want to make sure each family has healthy food--even when school is closed for the summer! The students will be able to learn STEM, horticulture, compassion, nutrition, collaboration, and so much more.
These garden beds will feed the brains and the stomachs of our students!
My second graders will be able to work with students in other grades, as well as other languages to do science experiments using plants. Once the experiments are completed (don't worry, it's only experiments based on amounts of sun and water!), the food grown on these plants will be given to students in the school throughout the summer. These vegetables will help provide healthy and nutritious foods to those in need.
