Do you love watching the hit television show CSI? Help my students experience the thrills of being CSIs! They are tired of looking at pictures of comparing DNAs, hearing stuff on TV about DNA evidence and not knowing their blood types! It is about time they use cool apparatus to study forensics!
My AP Biology students are the best students in my School.
They were handpicked and had to go through rigorous testing to be in the AP Biology class. My school does not specialize in Science because it is more inclined in Business, so Science classes are not given that much funding. The students in my class are planning to become doctors and forensic scientists in the future and having that dream here in New York City is really tough. Coming from low income families living in a city is a very tough challenge. These AP Biology students though are very strong willed and are goal focused. They are the best in the school and are very much motivated.
My Project
This project will mark a history in my school. This will be the first time that students in my school can experience forensic science using cool gadgets and learning the processes firsthand. I am requesting for a DNA electrophoresis apparatus that can compare 6 different DNAs at the same. They also need a blood typing activity package to compare blood types. Students have been learning DNA fingerprinting through pictures and videos only and it does not really give them the fun learning experience. This project will give them an opportunity to think about pursuing careers in the field of sciences by comparing DNA evidences and identifying different blood types. May it be medical or forensics, I would like to give my AP Biology students the experience every high school student should have. The experience of having to enjoy science, loving every moment of it because it will be memorable for them.

Pictures are not enough for my students to learn. This forensic science laboratory activity is a fun way of learning to compare DNA sequences and to help them identify blood types. Learning through discovery and first hand experiences are the best teachers! I want my students to have fun while learning, please help me make it happen! We'll never know, we might need their services in the future as future forensics scientists!
