The FTC Team was able to compete this year with a base kit. They could not make the robot address all the challenges because they lacked the necessary parts. These parts will make it a little easier to build the robot and make the team have a greater chance of success.
These students are in grades 9-12.
All students are eligible to participate. FTC addresses a need in the high school for a science club which helps students develop stronger skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The competition team is made up of 10 students (typically seniors) and are supported by a club of more than 30 more students!
My Project
The materials will be used to make the robot for years to come. The additional Tetrix Kit for FTC will provide students with the extra metal supports, two additional motors, servos, and many structural components necessary for building a complex robot.
The FTC competition challenge changes each year and a new robot is designed in September. These parts will put our team on a more level playing field, as most teams have more than the base kit. The rack an pinion set was one piece we could have used this year but since this club is ONLY supported by donations, we did not have the resources to buy the additional set. Students also wanted to build pulley systems using programmed motors which we did not have. These additional items will make it possible to create a robot that can address the many task required by the FIRST Tech Challenge Competition. Overall, I wanted to provide students with the tools they would need to work on a real world problem.
The additional kit and materials will give my students the chance to compete with some of the more established teams.
It will provide the tools necessary to help my student develop skills they will use in the future in any field which they choose. I also hope this will help encourage students to pursue careers in Science and Technology!
