My students need sight word readers and games, informational texts reader collection and a comfy bean bag for our classroom library area to promote reading fluency.
Imagine a classroom where students are eager to practice their sight words using engaging materials and cooperative games.
Those beginning literacy skills will be build to allow more complex reading practice while sitting in a comfy bean bag and cushion area that is part of our classroom library.
My classroom is full of positive, engaged and resilient children who are curious and excited learners.
I am a special education teacher and teach students in a small group setting, modifying learning to suit their learning styles, different disabilities and areas of need. Students in my classroom have mild learning disabilities, which generally fall under the following categories: specific learning disability, speech and language impairment, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and other health impaired. All my students come from low-income families; 68% of students in my school receive free meals and have very limited reading resources at home. Most of my students are struggling readers and need variety of multi-sensory learning methods to acquire and practice academic skills and content. All of my students live in urban part of the bay area in CA.
My Project
Students will use sight word instructional games and materials following systematic phonological awareness, phonics and sight word instruction to reinforce taught concepts and allow them opportunities to practice learn skills by "doing and engaging" with others. Educational outcome research suggests that students learn approximately 50% by seeing and hearing, 70% what they discuss, 80% of what they experience and 95% of what they teach to one another. I will be utilizing acquired materials to have students practice reading skills with partners, and teaching each other how to remember letter patterns and sight words. Hands-on learning is extremely powerful and fundamental for all children! Cooperative activities allows students to engage, take responsibility and feel empowered about their learning and results.
My project will reach students who have been identified as struggling readers.
They will be able to work on their skills at their levels and engage in game-format activities that promote learning for themselves and their peers.
