From Shabby to Innovative: Creating a Classroom Library

My students need a bookstand, Nook eReader with cover, bean bag seats, and other reading-related supplies to provide an engaging reading area to make reading comfortable and exciting!

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My struggling readers have not yet discovered this amazing feeling. I'd like for my students to have access to a classroom library where they can read or listen to books out loud on eReaders or CD's.

My students are struggling readers who are performing several grade levels below their peers.

They are not fluent readers and often lack parental support. Some are homeless or lack electricity and basic needs. Others are caregivers for younger siblings and attend school because they need hot meals and someone to talk to. Many are frustrated and embarrassed that they cannot read at grade level and pass grade level tests and county/state exams. If they become too frustrated and aren't given incentives, they will become future dropouts.

My Project

I wish to provide my students with a safe, comfortable, and innovative place to discover the love of reading for pleasure. Because my students are on the elementary reading level, it is difficult to find books that they can read that are about middle school subjects. Countless studies have prove that students who listen to and read along with upper level books on CD/MP3 advance grade levels at a significantly higher rate because they find pleasure in what they are reading and learn to identify and are introduced to more complex words. I wish for my students to have access to eReaders, which can read aloud newspapers, magazines, and books to my students as they follow along. I also would like them to have current books on CD/MP3 available for the same reason. Finally, a comfy reading area, with bean bags and book displays, would complete the environment!

I envision this project making a vital difference in the lives of my students.

If I can develop a love of reading in my students, I will have accomplished all of my goals. With so many innovative reading devices for them to explore, I want them to catch a glimpse of how reading can impact and influence their lives for the better!
