One of the most influential scientists of our generation, Tim Berners-Lee, once said, "We need diversity of thought in the world to face the new challenges." It is the students in my classroom who will be solving these new challenges in the future. They are no strangers to diversity, however they are the perfect candidates to become lifelong learners.
Coming to school for the majority of my students is an escape from the reality they call “home,” as many of them face challenges that are beyond their control.
For some of these students, our school’s faculty and staff are the most influential adult figures in their lives. As a teacher of these students, it is my responsibility to provide them with a safe environment where they are able to reach their highest potential.
Nearly 60% of our students receive free and reduced lunch, however this does not define who they are or who they will become. My students are the future engineers and problem solvers of challenges that our world has yet to face. This project will challenge my students academically and highlight their unique abilities and strengths, getting them one step closer to making their dreams a reality.
My Project
As children, many of us spent endless hours constructing forts, building castles, and letting our imaginations take us anywhere and everywhere we wanted to go. Most of us didn't even know what an engineer was, never mind the life-altering creations that they share with the world. The engineers of tomorrow are currently sitting in my classroom, waiting to make our world a better place through the use of technology. VEX robotics kits will allow them to do just that.
The four VEX robotics kits will be used on a daily basis in our Project Lead The Way classroom, a program that allows students to explore STEM careers through inquiry and project based learning.
Although most children do not think of themselves as engineers while playing with their toys, the concept and creativity is there. Engineers create everything from bicycles to Mars rovers, and children can learn so much about the world of engineering through robotics. Giving my students the opportunity to design and construct robots will help them understand the design process and teach them concepts such as electrical engineering and mechanics, all while having fun!
