From Chaos To Calm (A Quiet Learning Environment)

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My special ed students find traditional schooling very challenging so I'm teaching them computer skills, math skills, reading skills, etc as they learn to become DJs.

All students at our school are moderately to severely challenged and we look for effective ways to engage their minds.

Music is always a great motivator and we find great success if we can incorporate art into their lessons. Whereas they may be terribly frustrated with their inability to read or write they light up to music and using it brings out the best in them. We have (unofficially) the most wheelchairs of any school in the country and many students with behavior challenges that prevent them from attending ordinary school. That being said, we have the best kids on the planet and they love the programs that we create for them.

My Project

Due to their disabilities our students will have an extraordinary difficult time finding jobs when they graduate. Therefore we try and give them skills that even if they don't lead to paying jobs will provide an important function in their family and community. Every family has parties and every party has music. With this DJ class we are giving our students skills that their families and friends will appreciate as they take an ordinary party and turn it into a blast! Right now the classroom is cacophony as the iPods and iPads are all playing at the same time. Headphones will allow the students to complete their assignments without the distraction of everyone else's music as well as allow me to work with students one on one without having to shout above the din.

Individualized instruction is the best kind of education and these headphones will allow the students in my class to each work at their own speed.

What is chaos right now will be, with this gift, a calm, humming hive of learning. I will not have to shout and my students will be able to focus more clearly on their work. Within this new learning environment my students will learn skills that their friends and families will value and might hopefully even lead to gainful employment.
