Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 6th Grade Reading classroom is a hands-on, Reading Jungle with rainforest plants, dart frogs, and a waterfall mural. It is a place where my students love to be. They are becoming more literate every day and now I want to help them learn financial literacy as well.
My students come from a high poverty area and need to prepare themselves for the future by learning financial literacy.
They need to learn how to budget, make future career and education plans, and how to be an informed consumer.
They will create and follow a budget as they design a frog terrarium and make financially sound choices as they make purchases based on their frog’s needs, learn how to plan for ‘needs’ before ‘wants’, and calculate yearly feeding costs.
Next they’ll learn about the many opportunities they have for future careers and educational opportunities, particularly in the STEM areas. They will consider their interests, career areas, create financial goals, and outline a path to achieving them.
Students will also learn about the Fair Trade, Equal Exchange, and Rainforest Alliance logos and the hidden costs of chocolate on our environment and society. Rainforest are being destroyed and, in Africa, child labor and slavery is a common practice in growing cocoa.
My Project
After completing their budgets, my students will use the terrarium kits to build habitats for the dart frog tadpoles they are currently raising. The cubbies are to store their project materials and finished terrariums. They will use the career books and career apps to research careers and create a pathway to achieve their education and career goals. They also need an organizer to store their career books and resources so they are more accessible to students.
As my students learn about chocolate, they will need white boards for surveys and group activities/games as they learn how their choices might support unfair trade practices, child slavery and labor, and unsustainable growing practices. They will then experience a hands-on, chocolate sampling activity, exploring products that have been produced through socially and environmentally friendly methods. Finally, they will use the iPad minis to record a PSA about chocolate and the logos to share what they have learned with the school.
Many of my student don’t realize how important it is to be financially literate or how many opportunities they have, even in such a high poverty area.
This project will help make them aware of wise money spending decisions, prepare them for better paying careers in the future, and understand the true cost of items they may take for granted, all helping them to become truly financially literate.
