My Students

It's hard enough trying to make friends without a disability. Imagine trying it as a child with Autism, CP, blindness, partial paralysis, a speech and language disability, a learning disability, topped off with a social skills deficit!

The children I teach attend a district level special education program, meaning they do not attend their neighborhood school.

Each child has a unique story and faces many challenges: physical, medical, and/or academic. One need they all have in common is need for social skills instruction.

My Project

An integral part of social skills instruction in school is giving children the opportunity to generalize the skills they are learning. In other words, they need to take the skills outside of the classroom and engage with their community. In this yearlong project, the children create bracelets, make poster and video advertisements, and sell the bracelets to their peers. The project ends with the children donating the money from the sale to a local chapter of The Miracle League, a charity working to build a baseball field for children with special needs. Most of the bracelets the children make are made with beads. The beads allow the children to work in groups, create patterns, develop skills for time management and planning, & work on fine motors skills. The sale focuses on community engagement, money skills, and speech and language skills. The children also learn marketing by making a commercial that is shown throughout the school.

This project displays their abilities NOT their disabilities, which is our ultimate goal.
