This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Take a moment to reflect on the first book that truly awakened your passion for reading. Think of how magical that moment was for you. Many of my 7th and 8th grade students have yet to discover how magical the world of reading can be. I want this school year to be the year that inspires them

My students come from a variety of backgrounds.

Because of this, they fail to see the commonalities between themselves and the people sitting beside them each day in school. For many of these students, school is not a priority, because things "outside of school" seem so much more inviting and entertaining. My strongest desire is to bring that same excitement and passion off of the streets and into the classroom for my students.

My Project

Through the use of these books, Monster and Shooter, I would begin to take students on a literary journey that introduces them to individuals who share striking similarities to them. Many of these students can not afford to purchase their own copies of multiple novels, and this resource would help make the materials attainable for them.

By beginning to introduce students to books that contain characters like them, who are going through situations they see all too often, I hope to awaken the desire in these students to strive for greatness, and to become stakeholders in their own educations.
