Folk tales have become an integral part of my K-2 students' learning this year. They love to hear these silly old tales with funny characters and great morals. They can't get enough of the movements that come with them, and they are asking for more in-depth learning about folk music.
We are a suburban Chicago district of low income students.
Many receive free or reduced-fee lunches. Despite their physical surroundings and life circumstances, they thrive in our school! We are a community of strong, happy, supportive and wonderful students, staff, parents and community partners. Money is tight, and we look to donations and grants to supplement their learning.
My Project
I sing the folk songs depicted in the books, but I don't have the resources to purchase them. I would use the books and the document camera to visually show what happens in the song. There is also historical and contextual information in the books about where they originated and how they were first used. The parachute and stretchy band will be used to play games associated with the folk tales (and other songs and games in class).
In class, my students love hearing "There's A Hole in the Bucket," "Jennie Jenkins," and many of the folk tales already.
They would benefit from being able to visualize the stories through the beautiful picture books that John Feierabend has created. And, being able to physically express themselves with the parachute and stretchy bands would bring even MORE excitement to music class.
