My Students

Research says that if you can teach something, then you have a complete understanding of that concept. I want to challenge my higher achieving students to create lessons to help me teach science and social studies to all of my students. I got the flip cam idea from a Discovery Education conference

My school is a suburban school in North Carolina.

Our student population consists of the following: 22% white, 18% Hispanic, 49% African American, 5% Asian, 6% multi-racial. 69.54% of our 756 students qualify for free/reduced lunch. English as a second language (ESL) is represented by 23 different languages. Our school's website displays the following information: Celebrating Student Achievement ** 2010-2011 School of Distinction ** 2010 Science Olympiad Regional Competition: Two 4th Place Medals 2009-2010 NC State Music Festival Adjudication: 6th Grade Chorus, Superior Rating 8th Grade Girls' Ensemble, Superior Rating 2009-2010 Fiesta-Val Music Competition: 8th Grade Mixed Chorus, Excellent Rating and 1st Place 8th Grade Girls' Ensemble, Superior Rating and 1st Place, Champion of Middle School Division ** 2009-2010: All AYP Goals Met ** ** 2009-2010 School of High Growth **

My Project

I have attended a Discovery Education workshop and a NASA conference about enhancing STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) in the classroom. Such trainings provide wonderful ideas, but are sometimes unrealistic because of the supplies necessary to implement those ideas. The idea that I want to implement will encourage creativity in my higher achieving students while benefiting all of my students. I want my higher level students to design lessons on science and social studies topics and record them for helping to teach those concepts to all of my classes. The idea from the conference included recording lectures and creating "paper slide" lessons. I plan to not just limit the lessons to those two ideas. I hope that my students' creativity will develop lessons that will increase student interest and learning in all areas of the required objectives I have to teach. Because they will be completing this in groups, they will also learn critical cooperative learning skills.

Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) has become a critical part of education.

Unfortunately, implementing creative STEM lessons requires materials that are costly, but not necessarily consumable (like paper). My students need flip cams and tripods to record their group prepared lessons to help teach their chosen topic. Having and using more technology in the classroom will help me utilize 21st century tools to teach 21st century skills. Teachers are expected to prepare students for jobs that don't exist yet. I want to be one of the teachers that accomplishes that.
